Managing Expectations

As a photographer, much of what I enjoy about travel is getting to take photos in new places. Though much of the fun is finding new locations and pressing the shutter button there, most locations have signature photographs that are almost obligatory for the visiting photographer.

I’ve found, however, that my efforts often don’t quite match up with more famous others taken there.

Inevitably, the light’s not quite perfect, or the weather isn’t optimal, or some part of the subject is missing or changed. There have been times I’ve come away from spots I’ve dreamed of visiting frustrated at my efforts.

What I’ve realized, though, is that the photos I take near where I live are usually better than those of visiting photographers. I’ve done the best local shots in all kinds of light, with several variations of subject, and have come out with some pretty stunning photographs.

To do that, I’ve had to go back to those locations time and time again, waiting for the circumstances to come together in just the right ways. On a vacation, where I’m able to allocate only a few hours to any given location, there’s a much-reduced chance that all the factors required for an outstanding photo will be there. It’s happened, and I’ve definitely hit some home runs on vacations, but the ratio of amazing to average is similar to the rate at home.

Of course, I’m at home more often. So, I’m trying to appreciate the things that I’m able to do. I’m very blessed to be able to visit many of these locations at all. I’m able to admire the work of others and marvel at the way that the conditions came together for them. Occasionally, I’m able to absolutely nail my own unique twist on a signature shot.

I can’t reasonably expect to get a perfect shot every time when I travel. I certainly don’t get one at home. In the same way that I’m inspired by others, I hope I am inspiring them in turn in my local territory.

I’ll celebrate what I’m able to do, and enjoy the work of others elsewhere, even when I don’t get the same results when I visit.
